The role of women in society is complex. Various, cultural, social, historical, political, and economic issues impact and effect how women are viewed, treated, and function in our society and within the criminal justice system.

Societies have historically been patriarchal in nature and as crime developed within society, theorist focused primarily on explaining male criminality or gender- neutral criminality. Crime involving women was treated as an anomaly and therefore, studies of women and crime were limited. Studies that were conducted for women, tended to focus more on why rates and types of offending differed between men and women. Currently, those in criminal justice, utilize traditional criminological theories and feminist perspective to explore female criminality.

Suppose you are invited to write a paper on women in criminal justice for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. The readers want to know the following:

1) Are there newer theories or perspectives, that have better application for studying female offending than the traditional criminological theories? Provide a description of those theories or perspectives and how they would be more effective.
