He seems not himself and depressed that he left his home land. He longs to go to his ancestral home land that his father spoke of when he was a child. Claude does not like the Western World or their traditions. He prays to their god not for salvation but rather so he does not stand out among the people. He is torn between his body that’s in America and his soul that wants to leave because it not home. Claude feels like he has be brought here only to be tormented by the menacing white man because they took his people from their homeland. Claude thinks that he will never see Africa and speak his people’s native tongue or sing their songs. It weighs heavy on Claude throughout the poem as he makes his way through his daily life in America.Part 3 discussion response:Shirley Jackson, “The Lottery”The tension in this story is based upon Tessie Hutchinson and her community. In this story, the lottery is a draw for which person in the village will be stoned. When Tessie’s husband unfortunately draws the winning ticket, she explains to the villagers that it is not fair and her husband was rushed in choosing his ticket. To me, her plea seems to be from a women who is scared of being stoned and not because her husband was actually rushed in his drawings. In line 45, some villagers shame her for being unsportsmanlike. “Be a good sport, Tessie,” Mrs. Delacroix called, and Mrs. Graves said, “All of us took the same chance.” This is a long tradition that repeats every year and dates back to the first settlers of the village. In the other villager’s eyes, the resolution is for Tessie to own up and let the villagers stone her to death, which she eventually does.
