In your first paragraph, provide background information about your topic which moves from general to specific, ending with statements about the specific focus of your research and why you think it is important.
In your second paragraph, state a question that you would like to answer through your research. By answering this question, you will try to fill a gap in or build on existing research to contribute to the body of knowledge about your topic. Next, state your thesis as it currently stands, which answers your research question based on the research you have done so far about your topic. Your thesis will provide the foundation for the content of your essay.
In your third paragraph, include sentences that indicate the structure/organization of your essay by stating the key ideas of and key research sources that will be used in the body paragraphs.
