During the 50s & 60s, musicals used to be one of the great genres, and the studios produced them in record numbers. Now, musicals are a rarity. Do you think musicals have gone out of style? If so, how do you explain the popularity of films like Chicago (which was nominated for several Academy Awards and won Best Picture), Dream Girls, High School Musical, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd, Mama Mia!, Pitch Perfect, La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and the other modern musicals?What do you like or dislike about musicals? Do you like any of the great Rodgers & Hammerstein greats, such as The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Pacific, or Carousel? Did you grow up watching musicals such as Grease, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Shampoo, The West Side Story, La Bamba, or others? Many of these films were targeting children as the primary audience. Why? Why do adults also like them? Do most animated films today fall in to the musical genre?I personally love Julie Andrews.
