Write an analysis/synthesis essay on a group of thematically or stylistically linked texts. If you do not wish to use one of the approaches below, you may create a prompt whereby you focus on a type of literary criticism and a thematic idea by creating a critical question that your paper will answer. Become an expert on one type of literary criticism and use the questions of that type of critic to write your analysis/synthesis paper. If you do this, create and submit a prompt for approval. Essays are expected to provide both analysis and synthesis—that is, you will need to make meaning of the individual texts and to highlight similarities and differences among them, discussing multiple texts in a single paragraph on occasion. The thesis statement will need to identify the theme under examination and characterize what each text’s sentiment/attitude is towards that theme. (You can set up your thesis as follows: “Three texts have explored _______: Text A ______; Text B ______; Text C ______.”) Your thesis will set up your readers’ expectations, highlighting the insights to be featured in your discussion, and also help to keep you focused as you develop the essay.
