Jane Elliot establishes a microcosm of a racist society. She gives the blue-eyed students the opportunity to experience the kind of treatment meted out to people of color and others who are considered “different.”

She identifies a group of people by a particular characteristic, eye color.
She discriminates against them and lowers her expectations of them.
She forces them, by her discriminatory treatment, to look and act inferior.
She blames their inferiority on their eye color.

Write an essay describing how Jane Elliot uses language, tone of voice, body language, props, etc. to convince people of one groups’ inferiority/unworthiness to receive resources. Also describe system factors that make discrimination work. Right now, there are people who do what Jane demonstrated. Find a contemporary public figure who uses the tools that Jane used and explain how this person convinces others of one groups’ inferiority.

In addition to describing how groups are influenced to be biased and discriminatory, write about the effects, that you witnessed in the documentary, of being a target of bias. Extend your thinking out to groups that you know have been oppressed in this way. What is the effect of discrimination on the individual, family, and the communities of the oppressed.

The essay should be at least 300 words written in APA style (12 point New Times Roman font, double spaced, 1 inch margins, running head, page numbers, etc.,) and free of spelling and grammar error. If your ideas are not common knowledge and or provocative (Someone would say, “hey I don’t agree”) sources of information should be cited both in text and on a reference page. Title pages and reference pages are not included in the word count.
