WRITE A PAPER DESCRIBING MODERN ART HISTORY.

Everybody has experience with the Focus Piece project. What’s different this time is that we can’t actually visit museums and experience works of art in person. Adapting to the times, i invite you to visit museum web sites or galleries online or discover works that inspire you in other online platforms. The time parameters are from 1945-1985. As with the first assignment, your selection could be a work of art in any medium. It is appropriate to discuss your own personal reasons for why you choose the particular work you want to discuss. First person voice is encouraged! I recommend that you respond to the work in a straightforward manner–this is the “observational” part of the assignment. What does it look like, how is it made? The advantage of choosing a work of art from a museum web-site (anywhere in the world!) is that scholarship is available and details of the physical nature of the work will also be archived. After observational analysis–what does it look like, what can you determine by looking at the work–you might want to consider how online viewing impacts your engagement with the work–turn to some scholarly research to inform the work of art.
