Assignment prompt/requirements 1. Select an issue within the topic of education. Using the Internet, do some preliminary research to come up with ideas. (Examples: school security, college tuition, textbooks, high school exit exam, school athletics, standardized testing, private schools, education vouchers, etc.)2. Develop and craft your thesis (1 major claim). Your thesis must be a sentence. This is your primary claim, argument, position regarding the topic/issue.3. Develop and craft your sub claims (3 minor claims total). Each minor claim must be a sentence. Another way to look at minor claims: they are the reasons why you think your major claim. The minor claims should lead your body paragraphs (either topic sentences or a sentence very early in the paragraph).4. Research (look for evidence to support your minor claims).5. The paper must have 2 separate pieces of evidence (articles) from the Internet and 1 piece of evidence from an interview that you conduct (interview someone who has experience with one of your minor claims- teacher, counselor, student, family member). Again, you must have 2 articles and then information from 1 interview that you conduct. 3 pieces of evidence total for the paper. 1 for each minor claim (body section of the paper).6. Write out an outline for your paper (recommended). Do not include the outline with your paper (the outline is just a prewriting step to help you). I. Major Claim (Thesis)A. Minor Claim 11. Evidence 1 (article or interview)B. Minor Claim 21. Evidence 2 (article or interview)C. Minor Claim 31. Evidence 3 (article or interview)(*note that your paper structure is developed from this outline-all the components are there)Paper structure:INTRODUCTION- Introduce your issue/problem. Explain.- End on your major claim (thesis)–should be the last sentence of the introduction paragraph.BODY SECTION 1- First minor claim (develop and explain) and 1 piece of supporting evidence.BODY SECTION 2- Second minor claim (develop and explain) and 1 piece of supporting evidence.BODY SECTION 3- Third minor claim (develop and explain) and 1 piece of supporting evidence.CONCLUSION- Summarize your overall paper (briefly).Paper should be at least 3 full pages long (can be little longer if you need it but don’t write under 3 pages). No works cited page necessary. Instead, make sure you provide source information each time you introduce a new piece of evidence. In other words, if you want to use an article simply say: “According to “School Security” in Time magazine, Jon Smith states that schools…” Give the reader enough source information in the signal phrase (the first time you introduce it) to cover yourself. After the source is introduced, you can use: “Smith also says that we should…”
