These professionals must come up with strategies to allow for continued growth and provide clinical training to their staff and interns. A clinical director should be able to solve problems quickly and effectively using excellent critical thinking skills. Some of the most important functions of a clinical director include developing and monitoring budgets for service programs and working effectively with the finance staff. He or she must also work with other members of the management team and communicate effectively with them. Additionally, clinical directors develop and plan strategies to manage program growth and ensure program sustainability. Reviewing program services – and changing them as necessary to meet the clients’ needs – is also essential. A clinical director needs to recruit clinical interns and maintain working relationships with graduate schools as well. Some typical qualifications of a clinical director include professional experience with management and staff supervision, including working with a team. A clinical director should be able to understand and demonstrate the ability to generate revenues for clinical services, as well as have experience in client billings (such as Medi-Cal). A clinical director should have great communication skills and be open to working flexible hours. Aditionally, a clinical director needs great organizational, program development, and public speaking skills, as well as experience in basic computer software such as the Microsoft Office suite. These individuals may also need to carry supplies up to 30 pounds in weight, as well as walk up and down stairs frequently.
