Final Project – Data Visualization – Fall 2023: (25% of total course grade) • Choose one of two options for your Final Project: either Option 1 or 2 below, not both.
[1] Option 1 – Data Dashboard and Report: Create (1) a 1-page (8.5 x 11” page) Tableau dashboard and (2) 1-page report (e.g., 200- to -250-words) based on Tableau’s Superstore dataset or personally-researched data (e.g., if you have an interest you would like to visualize). Your dashboard and report will communicate to your audience members as if they are new to the material.
Requirements: There are two major requirements: • (1) Create a 1-page (8.5 x 11” page) Tableau dashboard with as many visualizations in it as is necessary to fully discuss / display your topic (e.g., most likely 2 to 4 visualizations). Less than 2 or more than 4 visualizations would likely hinder your ability to create a high quality 1-page dashboard. • (2) Create a 200- to 250-word report to show the key information audience would want to know from the dataset and dashboard. In this 200- to 250-word report, there should be at least 2 different types of visuals that are included in your dashboard.
• Option 1 should be approximately 2-pages in length (one page for dashboard, one page for written report), but references are not included in these 2 pages. • Submit your dashboard and report as one PDF, not multiple documents. If I cannot understand what you are showing, points will be deducted. Screen shot your Tableau visualization if you have problem converting it into a PDF. Insert the screen shot into a Word or Google document, and Save As -> PDF (Word) or File -> Download As PDF (Google Doc) your visualization/report as one PDF. • Apply as many possible methods/techniques learned from this course as necessary to make your dashboard appealing and easy to read. This includes, but is not limited to: o Titles: clear and compelling dashboard titles o Data preprocessing: clean the data, create new columns if necessary o Legends, labels, x/y axes: clear and compelling dashboard legends, labels, axes, etc. o Colors: appropriate color palette o Filters: appropriate filters to highlight important aspects of your data o Miscellaneous visuals: different and appropriate visuals o Additional shapes, buttons, links, and/or text: include as necessary • Note: No additional explanation should be used for this option beside your 200- to 250-word report.
[2] Option 2 – Data Visualization Essay: Topic: Research and write a 400- to 500-word data visualization essay on either, not both of: (1) COVID-19 or (2) the 2020 U.S. Election. Visualization Sources: Analyze 1 to 2 data visualizations on your topic. You could find visualizations here: • https://informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations/covid-19-coronavirus-infographic-datapack/ • https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/data-visualization.htm • https://knoema.com/insights?tag=USelections2020 • https://flowingdata.com/tag/election/
Feel free to find your own source material if you prefer not to use visualizations from the sites above. Length/Format: 400- to 500-words, 12-point Times New Roman font. Visualizations and references are not included in your word count. Add your word count to the top of your essay.
Content: Your essay should consider (but is not limited to) the following questions: • Introduction/Background: A brief description of your topic, including: o Why did you choose your topic? Why is it interesting and important? o How and why data visualizations are used to display your topic?
Data Visualization Examples: Describe 1 to 2 visualizations on COVID-19 or the 2020 U.S. Election: o Where did you find your visualizations? o Which type of visualizations did you choose? What information is displayed in your visualizations? o Do these visualizations measure the same aspect of the topic or different aspects? o What are the differences and similarities between these visualizations?
Discussion: Apply what you have learned from the course to discuss the following: o Why are your visualizations (in)effective in presenting information (consider viewer perspective)? o Provide suggestions/solutions to improve the visualization.
References: Include at least 2 formal APA references. Turnitin will check your essay for plagiarism. If you fail to use proper references or there is plagiarism, you may receive a failing score for your project. References are not included in your 400- to 500-word word count.
