Feel free to use it or not: The acronym LGBTQI+ encapsulates a diverse community of identities, including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and intersex individuals. Sometimes, the letter ‘A’ will be included to represent asexual individuals and allies, although oftentimes, it isn’t typically used. The LGBTQI+ community does not adhere to the heterosexual-dominated norms of society, which has led to an ongoing fight for justice, acceptance, and equality; for ages, the LGBTQI+ community has had to suppress their differences in order to “fit in” to society. However, during the 21st century, as societal attitudes evolve, understanding and addressing the multifaceted issues faced by the LGBTQI+ community has become increasingly crucial. It is important to address the issues that those in the community face on a daily basis. Across the country, LGBTQI+ people experience pervasive discrimination that negatively impacts all aspects of their lives despite the unprecedented progress made. These areas include their personal lives, employment, and health care, as well as housing. According to the Center for American Progress (CAP)—an independent, nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans—they emphasize that “[such] discrimination has substantial adverse effects on economic, physical, and mental well-being, and many LGBTQI+ individuals alter their behavior to avoid experiencing discrimination,” (CAP, 2023).
