Research paper (20%): You will need to choose a contemporary foreign policy issue and write a short research paper that:
Discuss whether American military bases in Japan still justified today?
summarizes how the United States has approached the issue in recent years;
describes the positions of key U.S. actors, such as the president, members of Congress, advocacy groups, or the public, on the issue (note that not all of the actors listed above will necessarily have a clear position or play a significant role on the issue); and
assesses what factors – e.g. the national interest, ideas or norms, bureaucratic politics, leader characteristics, advocacy activity, and/or public opinion – seem to be influencing the U.S. approach to the issue.
Your paper should have a clear argument that is informed by your own research on the topic. In writing the paper, you should support your argument with information from a variety of reputable sources. Such sources can include, but are not limited to, articles in scholarly journals or policy magazines (such as International Security, the Washington Quarterly, or Foreign Affairs); think tank reports; government reports or documents; newspaper articles; press releases; and public opinion polls.
I will evaluate your paper based on the extent to which it presents a clear argument, supports the argument effectively with information from a variety of reputable sources, demonstrates knowledge about the topic, and is well-structured and well-written.
Your paper should be no more than 2000 words, not counting the bibliography. Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style when referencing sources, using in-text parenthetical references in the body of the paper and listing full citation information for all sources in the bibliography.
