Part One – Original Response Posting: Below, there are twenty examples of fallacious reasoning, all dealing with a violation of sufficiency. Identify the fallacy being committed by the speaker. Choose from the following: confusing cause with effect, guilt by association, appealing to the consequences of a belief, the spotlight fallacy, oversimplification, the relativist fallacy, the fallacy of accident, anecdotal evidence, post hoc ergo prompter hoc, magical thinking, the hasty conclusion, and the slippery slope. Explain each of your answers for the twenty items in two to three sentences for each.
1. Lurch: “Why don’t you take an analgesic for your terrible headache, Fester?” Fester: “You know that nature’s way is best, Lurch. It’s not wise to interfere with Mother Nature.” Lurch: “So you are just going sit there and suffer?” Fester: “I’m going to let nature take its course because the natural way is obviously the best way.”
2. Bubba: “Hey Jackie, I heard that there fella’ is from Afghanistan.” Jackie: “Okay. And?” Bubba: “I bet he’s part of the Taliban comin’ over here to terrorize Americans.” Jackie: “What makes you say that, other than your being Bubba?” Bubba: “I been a-watchin’ the CNN and the Fox News so I knows what’s goin’ on in the world.”
3. Lorne: “You realize that nearly everyone who has invested in a dot-com in the last three years has lost money, right?” Bjorn: “Oh, I see – just because they lost money, I’m going to lose too.” Lorne: “Not necessarily, I just want you to be aware of the risks.” Bjorn: “The risks don’t apply to me.”
4. Bianca: “You know, even if I thought she had something worth listening to, I’d tune out Nicole Richie.” Conrad: “Whatever for, Bianca? During her interviews she seems to make sense.” Bianca: Yeah, but she’s friends with that bimbo, Paris Hilton.” Conrad: “Ah yes, I should reconsider my opinion of her.”
5. Mick: “American cars, for the most part, are more reliable and cheaper to repair than foreign cars.” Keith: “Ah, Mick, me aunt had a Ford™ that did’na last a year before the motor crapped out. Aye, it was, in the end, cheaper to buy a new Toyota™ and she’s had that car for five years.”
6. Bubba: “Uh, hey there, Professor Bryant! What can I do to better understand this here material you’s a teachin’?” Professor Bryant: “Plan to attend class – on time – take careful notes, and try reading the material twice.” Bubba: “Shoot, that’s about as useful as a trap door on a canoe! I tried it all last week and I’m still as confused as a turtle at a turkey-shoot.”
7. Wayne: “Look at this, Garth. I read that people who do not get enough exercise tend to be unhealthy.” Garth: “That may be true for you, but I happen to know that I don’t need your exercise to be healthy.”
8. Nikita: “Alexei must hate me. He hasn’t spoken to me in a week!”
9. Jackie “I think it’s terrible that the Leader sentenced that man to five years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family.” Bubba: “Don’t you believe that thieves should be punished?” Jackie: “Of course I do, but …” Bubba: “But nothing! The guy stole – now let him pay the price.”
10. Sen. Palpatine: “I’m inclined to say that Sen. Antilles lacks a moral compass. Remember, he went yachting with Sen. Iblis during that sex scandal cover-up involving Iblis’s nephew.”
11. Gene: “Belief in creationism has a beneficial effect on the human species, since it encourages responsible obedience to the Creator and moral respect for those who were created by the Creator. On the other hand, belief in evolution and animal kinship normally leads people to selfishness, aggressiveness, and fighting between groups, as well as amoral attitudes and behavior by individuals.”
12. Simone: “Did you know that a greater percentage of American men smoke than American women?” Jean-Paul: “That just proves that being male is a contributing factor to smoking.”
13. Horton: “My wife left me because I didn’t go to her mother’s apartment for Christmas. Can you believe it?”
14. Pooper: “It would be horrible if the state legalized casino gambling.” Portmanteau: “Think about the revenue it would generate. Such revenue could really aid social services and fund education.” Pooper: “Perhaps, but do you want the accompanying rise in drugs, prostitution, and organized crime?” Portmanteau: “Well, no …” Pooper: “Then you better think again about the merits of legalized casino gambling.”
15. Kent: “It is claimed by some experts that severe illness is caused by depression and anger. After all, people who are severely ill are very often depressed and angry. It follows that the cause of severe illness is actually negative emotions. Thus, a good and cheerful attitude is the key to staying healthy.” Kent is committing which fallacy?
