What change occurred within this local society (e.g., colonization, economic development, access to the internet, etc.)?

What change occurred within this local society (e.g., colonization, economic development, access to the internet, etc.)?  How are the changes seen to impact the society? What were the traditional views of and/or expectations of each gender? How did the cultural changes impact these traditional views?  Have the cultural changes altered gender relations (e.g., has it lowered the status of women)? Did the local society find a way to alter their traditional views of males and females to fit into the new social order (e.g., women are now in the public realm)?
