The first half of the paper (around 2000 words should focus on the theory behind transformational leadership) The second half of the paper should apply the theory to practice. The practice should be in a secondary (high school) setting. You should begin with an introduction to signpost the essay intentions, followed by a recap of your project, providing an overview of the setting in which your project was based and the role of key leaders within the project. Ensure that this section is not too lengthy but provides sufficient detail for your reader to understand key actions that were undertaken in seeking to bring about improvement/’action for change’ in your setting.
2. You should include a rationale e.g. Why did you focus on this aspect of leadership? Make brief reference to vision, values and transformational leadership as part of your rationale.
3. Whilst the remainder of the assignment is for you to shape in response to your setting, the prompts below might support you in your thinking and preparation to write. The prompts are not designed as a writing frame:
- What do key theorists have to say about the place of values and vision in influencing follower participation in and commitment to action for change?
- In what way are values (curricular or otherwise) contested? What challenges does this raise for school leaders?
- What values and vision underpinned action for change in your chosen project? How were these decided upon?
- How did the presence, absence (or perhaps poor articulation) of vision and values influence staff commitment to your chosen project?
- How do key theorists define transformational leadership (with reference to the 4 Is) and how do these key ideas help you to analyse the TL practices in your setting?
- What do key theorists have to say about the affordances and challenges of transformational leadership and the limitations of TL theory?
- Was a transformational leadership approach adopted in leading forward your chosen project? If not, what kind of leadership approach was used?
- What was the impact of the transformational leadership approach (or lack of it) upon the success of the project? How do you know (what evidence can you put forward here)?
4. In your conclusion, reflect upon what have you learned as a leader from leading or participating in your chosen ‘action for change’ project? In doing so, connect your reflection on practice to key ideas from reading.
