Pakula’s film All the Presiden’ts Men (1976) depicts the groundbreaking investigative journalism of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward during the Watergate fiasco. In the film, Nixon is the corrupt power that needs to be removed while the press or the “fourth estate” emerges as a check on Washington corruption. One scene shows Nixon’s unwilling cameo as he accepts renomination at the Republican convention while Woodward works away at his downfall. The irony conveys the message that ultimately, the American system works. Do you agree that overall, Watergate revealed a system that works? What is your assessment of this event? Ford pardoned him and stood by this saying that by accepting pardon, Nixon was indeed admitting guilt. The Supreme Court declared in 1980 that the president was immune in civil cases as well as advised against “dangers of intrusion” in presidential powers and functions. Watergate swiftly helped change control in political parties, and made it evident that there was a need for reform. Nevertheless, its effect in American politics was short lived, even when it still lingers in our memories and in history, since the reforms necessary to avoid any sort or form of Watergate were not strong enough. Staunch partisanship is dangerous to Americans, and it is proven by the Mueller report, the biggest scandal in American politics since 1972. There is proof of how blatant the president’s crimes are, and how there was direct collusion with foreign powers, yet the president was not indicted. The strong resistance from the White House to withhold evidence and to control witnesses, then and now, is a very dangerous thing, it revealed a system with fundamental failures in which the president is thought to be above the law. Ultimately, power is a dangerous thing, because those who have it will seek to have more, and more often than not will find a way, even if it means to break the law to achieve their objective.
