(A) Block Approach. In this organizational pattern an essay is organized by discussing the position you disagree with first, point by point, then discussing the position you agree with, addressing the same points in the same order. Additional points where direct comparisons aren’t possible may be presented for each view/position, but such additional information should be presented as a part of the summary/conclusion section.
Controversy: They say “traditional grocery stores are a better option than health food grocery stores.” I say: Health food grocery stores are a better option than traditional grocery stores.”
Three lines of reasoning/evidence to be evaluated: environmentally friendly products, organic produce, and healthy alternatives to traditional medicine.
Introduction: Introduce the two views being compared. Conclude with a thesis statement or argument. Explain the lines of evidence/ reasoning that will be evaluated.
Example: There are benefits to shopping at traditional and health food grocery storess, but health food stores are ultimately the better option because they offer more environmentally friendly products, organic produce, and healthy alternatives to traditional medicine.
First Section: Discuss point #1 of the they-say view.
Example: Traditional grocery stores do not offer very many environmentally friendly products. Most of the cleaning products and packaging sold are not biodegradable and contain harmful chemicals that pollute our environment.
Second Section: Discuss point #2 of the they-say view.
Example: Traditional grocery stores do not have as wide a selection of organic produce as health food grocery stores. Instead, the majority of their produce is grown with pesticides and hormones.
Third Section: Discuss point #3 of the they-say view.
Example: Traditional grocery stores offer few natural remedies. Instead, health food grocery stores offer a large selection of over-the-counter drugs in addition to a pharmacy that sells medications manufactured by pharmaceutical companies.
Fourth Section: Transition to and discuss point # 1 of the I-say view, providing similarities and differences with point #1 of the they-say view.
Example: Health food grocery stores offer a wide selection of environmentally friendly products.
Fifth Section: Discuss point #2 of the I-say view, providing similarities and differences with point #2 of the they-say view.
Example: Health food grocery stores offer a wide selection of organic produce.
Sixth Section: Discuss point #3 of the I-say view, providing similarities and differences with point #3 of the they-say view.
Example: Health food grocery stores offer a wider availability of healthy alternatives to medications.
Conclusion: Summarize the evidence then conclude with a strong statement of your view.

(B) Point-by-Point Approach. In this organizational pattern an essay is organized by contrasting the two views of your controversy point by point. For each point, you would explain VIEW-B’s position (the position you disagree with) and then VIEW-A’s position (the position you agree with). Additional points where direct comparisons aren’t possible may be presented for each view/position, but such additional information should be presented as a part of the summary/conclusion section.
Introduction: Introduce the two views being compared. Conclude with a thesis statement or argument. Explain the lines of evidence/ reasoning that will be evaluated.
Example: There are benefits to shopping at traditional and health food grocery stores, but health food stores are ultimately the better option because they offer more environmentally friendly products, organic produce, and healthy alternatives to traditional medicine.

Example: Health food grocery stores offer a wider availability of healthy alternatives to medications than traditional grocery stores that offer a large selection of over-the-counter drugs in addition to a pharmacy that sells medications manufactured by pharmaceutical companies.
