How are the cultures of single mothers and their children used to “other” them and justify their marginalization? Examine the Sylvester and the Magic Pebble scenario on pages 110-113, or any of the other scenarios in chapters 6 and 7. What are the teacher’s values? What norms does she hold about how children should behave, and how do these norms define her interaction with a particular child? How has she created deficit pedagogy for a child, and What is the effect of this teacher’s interaction on the child?
